What counts as a business expense?
Schedule C Part II covers ordinary and necessary costs of running your business — advertising, supplies, home-office deduction, software, professional services, business mileage, health insurance premiums (subject to limits), and similar. Only business-related costs belong here; personal expenses do not.
Keep records: receipts, invoices, and mileage logs support the figures you report. This calculator uses your expense total as-is — it does not judge deductibility, and it is not tax advice.
From net profit to SE tax
Once expenses are subtracted, the calculator applies the same2026 SECA rules as the self-employment tax calculator: 92.35% of net profit is taxed at 12.4% (Social Security, up to $184,500) plus 2.9% (Medicare, no cap), with the additional 0.9% Medicare tax above filing-status thresholds.
